After sitting in my inbox for about 3 weeks, I finally watched a video that John Piper and his family had posted for Christmas. One thing that I noticed is that they did not have a Christmas tree in their house. Now, granted, maybe the tree is off camera. But I have wondered this for a while. Why do we put up a Christmas tree around Christmas? Serious question. Anyone know how the tradition began?
Also, here is the video that I am referring to.
what about the Jesus Tree?

ReplyDeleteHey Stephen,
ReplyDeleteI love the idea of a Jesus tree. My question posed in the post though is where did we as Christians begin the tradition of putting up an evergreen and throwing ornaments on it and a star on top to celebrate the coming of Jesus. I think that the Piper's are being much or intentional about their Christmas traditions than I ever have. So, if I am going to put an evergreen tree in my living room, I want to know why I'm doing it and what it has to do with Christmas. Make sense?
